Publishing quickly and accurately are sometimes in tension. When we get something wrong, our obligation is to fix it openly rather than quietly.
Email corrections@pressbbc.com with the article headline or link, the specific statement you believe is incorrect, and the correct information along with a source where possible. Anyone may request a correction; you do not need to be the subject of the article.
Every request is reviewed by an editor who was not the original writer. We check the claim against the original sourcing. If the claim is wrong, we correct it. If the original was accurate but unclear, we clarify it. If we conclude the article was correct, we explain our reasoning to the person who contacted us.
Substantive errors, meaning any error affecting the meaning, accuracy or fairness of a piece, are corrected in the text and disclosed in a correction note at the foot of the article stating what was wrong, what it now says, and the date of the change. We do not remove the note later.
Where an error appeared in a headline or was widely shared, we note the correction prominently at the top of the article.
Minor typographical and grammatical fixes that do not change meaning are made without a note.
If new information materially changes an article after publication, we update it and add a dated note explaining what changed and why. We do not silently rewrite published work.
We do not delete articles because a subject dislikes accurate reporting. We will consider removal only where publication presents a genuine legal or safety risk, and we record that an article was removed rather than making it vanish without explanation.
Where an article makes a significant criticism of an identifiable person or organisation, we offer them a fair opportunity to respond and publish that response where appropriate.
We acknowledge correction requests within two working days and aim to resolve them within five. Clear factual errors are usually corrected the same day they are confirmed.
